Am I eligible for this visa?

If you enroll in an educational program with an education institute recognized by the Colombian government, you are eligible to apply for this visa.

What are its benefits and restrictions?

Validity depends on the length of the program

It allows you to stay and study for up to two (2) years, depending on the duration of the program.

No beneficiaries except for post-graduate students

It does not allow you to bring your spouse or kids under 25, unless you are a postgraduate student.

Work permit only for post-graduate students

It does not allow you to work in Colombia for Colombian companies, since it doesn’t have a work permit, unless you are enrolled in a postgraduate program, such as a Master, a Ph.D. or similar, in which case you will be allowed to work up to twenty (20) hours per week, provided that the employer reports it to Migración Colombia.

No time accrue towards residency

Since it is a visitor-type (V) visa, it won’t allow you to add time in order to apply for a residency or (R) visa.

What do I need to apply?

In order to apply for this visa, you will need to show evidence that you have been accepted on a educational program and that you have enough financial solvency to live in the country.

The specific requirements for a student visa may vary depending on your sponsorship. If you are applying with the sponsorship of a Colombian host, you will need to provide documentation of your sponsor’s financial solvency and the sponsor’s motivational letter.

If you are applying with the sponsorship of an educational institution, they will present the application on your behalf.

If you are applying on your own behalf, you will need to provide documentation of your own financial solvency and a motivational letter.

Applying on your own behalf

Motivational letter

You will need to write a motivational letter informing your full identification (full legal name, passport number, birthdate, nationality and residency), explaining thoroughly and accurately the activities that you are planning to do under the student visa, including the name of the school, the address of the school, the type and name of the program/course you will attending, its schedule, the place where you will be staying and mention and give details from some contacts in the school.

Proof of your financial solvency

Provide your bank statements from the previous six months, showing a monthly income of at least 10 Colombian minimum wages, that is $13,000,000 COP per month.

(As of 2024, the minimum wage in Colombia is $1,300,000 per month)

Admission certificate

Certificate of admission or enrollment in the educational institution indicating the degree or program for which the student is admitted or enrolled and its duration.

A valid health insurance

You must have a health insurance policy that provides coverage in Colombia for risks including: accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death, and repatriation, with at least one (1) year of validity.

We recommend Genki to fulfill this requirement, as it offers:

  1. A default validity of 2 years.
  2. Monthly payments starting at 65 EUR.
  3. The option to cancel at any time.
  4. Quick and online purchase process (within one business day).
  5. Issuance of a health coverage summary in Spanish.
  6. Successful use by many of our clients in obtaining their visas.

You can get your visa application sponsored or backed up by a Colombian national or Colombian resident (a foreigner with a current valid Resident visa), if this is the case, you will need:

Letter from your sponsor

On this letter, your sponsor confirms that he/she will take full responsibility for your personal and financial well being during your stay in Colombia, including covering all expenses related to transportation, accommodation and repatriation.

The sponsor needs to include his/her phone number, physical address, email address, the type of relationship with you (relative, fiance, friend, business partner, etc.), the manual signature (on pen) and a fingerprint (one fingerprint) of either the right or left index finger, or right or left thumb finger.

The sponsor also commits on this letter to inform the Colombian government if you stay in the country illegally and to ensure your return to your country of origin. Ignoring this rule may result in sanctions.‍ The sponsor also needs to state in this letter previously sponsored visa applications.

Proof of the sponsor’s financial solvency

Attach his/her bank statements from the previous six (6) months, showing monthly income of at least 10 Colombian minimum wages.
